June 15 adoption event a success!

Many MCRS volunteers were on hand at Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley on Sunday, June 15, to promote the rabbits waiting for adoption there, including a few of the recently confiscated rabbits. Because several of the confiscated rabbits are not yet sterilized, there were only a few of those rabbits at the event:

Ben — a handsome adult male cinnamon Satin rabbit who has obviously had disagreements with other rabbits in the past. His nose is healing well, but shows signs of being bitten either seriously or several times before. Still, while he was initially shy, he quickly figured out that humans were pretty cool a')
document.write('nd had useful hands. He would often be seen sitting quietly next to a volunteer soaking up the attention.

Abe — a juvenile male rabbit who was adopted at the very beginning of the event by a family that had recently applied to MCRS as well. Several family members were present to assist in selecting just the right bun and after much thought and some comparison with other rabbits, it was clear Abe was the bun for them. Yay for Abe and his new family!

Toffee — a medium-sized reddish-tan rabbit also made her debut at the event. She had several visitors, but one repeat visitor who is seriously considering adopting this sweet girl at the upcoming adoption event on Sunday, Jun 22. Cross your paws for Toffee! :)

Of the other rabbits available at the event, one other bunny got adopted. A black lionhead female rabbit named Shady. MCRS members brought their beloved Jersey Wooley bun, Harvey, in to meet some possible companions and had a great date with Miss Shady. Harvey even groomed her! Lots of mutual interest and no bad behaviors. We squeaked this adoption in at the very end of the event and Shady went home with her happy new family.

Three more of the confiscated bunnies have earned their names:

Birch and Aspen — two young male siblings who will be available for adoption as individuals. These two boys show the exuberance of youth with frequent binkies and active play time. Both buns are mixed breed but marked similarly to English Spot rabbits. Birch is primarily white with brown markings, while Aspen is primarily white with black markings.

Mr Weasley — a charcoal gray adult male that came to us with pretty tattered ears and, in general, a little rough around the edges. He\'s come a long way in his first week in foster care. Although he is still a little shy, he has started to enjoy his foster mom\'s presence when she has a dried cranberry or two to share. It only took him one day to realize how great life was with fresh veggies, too! He is getting braver each day and explores a little further when he is out and about exercising. He got his name, because like Mr Weasley from the Harry Potter series, he is an easy-going guy who is also pretty curious and, at times, confused about muggles.

Now that MCRS has moved 38 of the confiscated rabbits into foster care, they are starting to get names and show some signs of their unique personalities. We\'d like to introduce the first of the new group of fosters:

document.write('- Amy — this youngster was the very last bunny picked up on the day of the confiscation. She had been running free at the tender age of about 3 weeks. She was malnourished and had an eye issue. To add insult to injury, she had to share a carrier with two larger buns w')
document.write('ho relegated her to the back and the urine puddle. So, when we first met this little munchkin, she looked like quite the ragamuffin.

document.write('- Val — short for Valkyrie, this bodacious babe is a gorgeous French Lop. She is very strong and independent and is just starting to learn that humans have their uses. Val has a serious case of conjunctivitis in both eyes, but we are treating her and hope she will be feeling better soon. Meanwhile, Val has informed us that her cage has not been done to her satisfaction and spends a fair amount of time rearranging things, ripping newspaper, etc.

document.write('- Billy — this handsome harlequin boy shows his battle scars on his ears, but is otherwise healthy. Named by the foster family\'s son, Billy is settling in to the goings-on at his foster home that he shares with his foster family and several other creatures.

document.write('- Thor — this scruffy, beat-up bun was one of those in the worst shape when we first met him. In addition to signs he had been beat up by other bunnies, he had a nasty eye abscess. Just before MCRS took him, his eye abscess burst, which actually helped the healing progress. When he was checked out by our vet on Monday, he appears to be doing very well and in need of no further treatment! However, he\'s very shy (I would be too if I\'d been beat up on by all my friends). We gave him a strong name so he\'d have something to aspire to. :)

document.write('- Rose — a beautiful white rabbit with rosy eyes who gave birth to 10 little ones this past Saturday. Named after the foster mom\'s great-grandmother who also had a large brood of children, she\'s a sweet-natured rabbit who is taking excellent care of her litter.

On Saturday, June 7, one of the remaining female rabbits gave birth to 10 little young\'uns. This brings the total number of rabbits to 53. That same day, four other females were spayed, so at least those four won\'t be giving birth to more in the future!

Over the weekend, MCRS started moving rabbits out of the shelter and into foster homes. Between Saturday and Sunday, 31 rabbits transferred into MCRS foster homes. The shelter is keeping 15 and the remaining 7 rabbits will transfer into MCRS foster care on Tuesday evening.

Under the agreement, the owner is entitled to reclaim 25 dogs and 15 rabbits. In ad')
document.write('dition, 13 dogs and 57 rabbits that belong to owners other than the property owner will also be returned and the property owner has one week to get them all back to their respective owners.

That leaves over 70 rabbits that are now officially surrendered to the Humane Society and will need the assistance of MCRS.
